How it works
Four lanes, one measure
The kick anchors the foundation, the snare accents backbeats, hi-hat subdivides the pulse, and toms accent fills.
Swing delays every second 16th note. Higher values turn straight meters into a relaxed shuffle.
Beyond common 4/4 time, musicians frequently use 2/4, 3/4, 6/8, and 12/8. Odd meters like 5/4 or 7/8 appear in jazz and progressive music.
